Need to buy a bottle of dark rum for part of a 7oth birthday present. It's for someone who loves dark rum but, thought something a little special would be really appreciated.

O.V.D of course!!! (Old Vatted Demerera)

It may be hard to get outside Scotland where it is THE rum to drink.
If he was a sailor he may like Woods'. It's what the RN used to dish out.
What about pusser's rum in a nice decanter or Woods 100%
You could "push the boat out"and buy some Pusser"s!!

google any of these, although highly recommended are WOOD's , PUSSERS, FOUR BELLS all dark navy rums
Alnwick Rum, by far the best according to my departed dad, but quite hard to get unless you live in or near Alnwick
Try asking for "Sugar Cane Brandy"
or do an Internet search for it.
navy neaters, and beware the golden rivet

Appletons dark rum. They do a wide range. And strong too.

My local vino shop that does super ranges of young vinter's offerings fromaround the world also has an excellent range of spirits, such as Sipsmith or Blackwood gin....

On its rum, they recommend Old English 5 year old; it may be a little lighter in colour:

The very best 'dark' rums are made in the same way as a good whisky - they are matured in casks previously used for sherry. Note that this produces rum that will be the same colour as whisky, and which is generally of better quality. The other class of really dark rums such as Woods, Captain Morgan, (and the OVD Andrew mentions), owe their much deeper colour to the addition of differing amounts of caramel and molasses. Which type is preferable depends on individual taste, but I'd say Pussers rum is a pretty good compromise between the two.
