I ordered a sofa from DFS over the phone having seen it online. I ordered a sofa and a chair. I have since been into one of the stores and the chair is not what I expected as it looks cheap and nasty for the price.
I have just called them and said I want to cancel the order of the chair. He said he needs to contact the factory and see if they've started making it because if they have then they wont be able to cancel it. I've paid 20% on both items in total and was due to pay the outstanding amount on delivery. I have had a sales contract through the post but it just states what I've ordered and the amount payable. Nothing about cancellation rights. I placed the order on the 3rd May. Can anyone tell me where I stand. Do I now have to go through with the full order?

Obviously, you haven't yet had delivery of the sofa. Even if you have, you still have a 'cooling off' period. My advice is to telephone DFS immediately and cancel the order; as is your legal right according to Government legislation.:-

They seem to take about six weeks from date of order to delivery. If that's the case then I doubt it's being made at the moment. I'd phone again and ask for someone further up the chain who can actually do something about your situation.
Confirm cancellation in writing recorded delivey so you know they got it

Thanks for the advice. I just called back and spoke to the same monkey who told me he couldn't cancel it as it was being delivered in 2 weeks time. I asked to speak to a supervisor, and someone is calling me back...
If the item(s) can be classed as custom made to your specifications then the right to cancel under the distance selling regulations doesn't exist.

Damn.
D-s....I appreciate what Chuck is saying but, unless you have requested alteration to the original specifications of the items, I would say you are on safe ground to cancel the order.

Keep us advised on the matter.

Just got off the phone to the supervisor who has advised me the chair has now been cancelled.

Thanks for your time :-)
Good result, well done.
I once ordered an item online (not from DFS) some time ago and like you wanted to cancel it. I can tell you it was delivered in a remarkable quick time and not as stated in their sales blurb of about 4 to 5 weeks. It was too big to return the item.
find the name of the chief executive and try to email him direct, most companies are name and company name, did it some time ago with McDonalds uk and got the thing I want sorted he phoned within two minutes. Its worth a try.
Will you get your 20% deposit back??
Question Author
I paid 10% off the chair and 10% off the sofa. They will now just transfer the 20% to the sofa so I wont loose anything.
I am pleased that things have worked-out to your satisfaction; as will be others who have responded in this thread.
