I went for a coffee earlier and while at the stand with sugar etc... I knocked the cup and a bit spilled over the side of the cup.
I got a clean tissue out of my bag and started to mop it up to make sure it was all clean and a woman sitting nearby just looked at me in bemusement and commented "why bother?" which was then repeated after I briefly explained nicely why I was bothering.
I was a bit taken aback! My view was that it was just courtesy, I spilled it and was more than happy to clear it up so the staff wouldn't have to do it for me and so it was all clean for the next customer who wanted to use it - more taken aback that she'd voice it.
Is it just me?

It was more the fact she made a point of saying it to me!
It's an ongoing issue in our work kitchen too - used by a lot of staff and there is usually stuff lying about unwashed and towels just dumped all damp and grubby around, water from the sink not mopped up and marks from milk and cups and such on the surfaces, even teabags dumped on the side - don't even get my started on some of the delights found in the fridges, it makes you wonder about the state of people's own homes!

I would also do that Jenna - my friend and I often clear our used cups etc away in a cafe either placing the cups/plates/trays on the stand provided or handing them to a waitress who are really appreciative! Hardly anyone seems to bother these days, the table in Asda cafe last week was a real tip, children had thrown all their food on the floor and tipped sticky fruit juice on the chairs!
