'met up with' and 'met'

I had an interesting period of time today with a student who could/would not see the superfluousness of 'met up with' over 'met'.

Just out of interest, do you see a difference between the two?
I was trying to point out that 'met' is perfectly acceptable. and 'met up with' is two words too many.

By the way Tony as a teenager I was a Mod.
Then, when I went to college I couldn't afford to be a Mod anymore and became a flower power hippy. It was much cheaper to buy floaty, indian cotton dresses than it was to buy Biba.

Talking of Mod's, I had three Lambretta scooters in my youth ( loads of mirrors and spotlights on them ), and ridden wearing my Paka.

I was not aware of the mods in the 60s, tony, (I'm clearly younger than you and, erm, others) as I was still at primary school, but as I was a big Jam fan and there was a mini -mod revival (Merton Parkers) in the late 70s, I did like to wear my brother's parka when I went to football matches
