'Gone to pot' is a phrase used to denote something that is no longer any use. It derives from the days when meat or vegetables were eaten for as long as possible, and when theyhad reached a stage of decomposition that made them dodgy enough to discard they 'went to pot' they were consigned to a large stew pot and boiled up with other leftovers into soup or stew to ensure that any remained goodness was extracted.
