The security services might use bribes, threats, or flattery, or some combination of all three,to recruit informers.
That they didn't work with him should have alerted MI5 to the fact that they were dealing with someone of conviction, and so, someone potentially more dangerous.

Thanks Daisy. I can believe they were ‘bugging’ him – and with good reason – but it doesn't appear that the possibilities of him working for the security services was discussed. Asking him if he wanted to work for them might have been some sort of tactic, but I doubt very much that it was a serious offer.
What's new ? Security services do this all over the world . They make the best spies if you can get them to switch and even if they don't really, they are used to send missleading information to the enemy. What is more there are thousands of them . Where do you think security services get their inside information from. ?
