Are Easyjet using a smaller cabin bag gauge yet. Anyone been asked to put their old size bag limit in the hold, and were they charged?

easyJet has announced a 'guaranteed' cabin baggage allowance which is 37 per cent below the maximum size allowed - because its packed planes can't always fit passengers' luggage on-board.

The budget airline currently allows luggage to be taken into the cabin if it’s below the maximum size of 56cm by 45cm by 25cm – a total of 63 litres per bag.

This will continue to be the maximum cabin allowance. But from July 2, easyJet is cutting the dimensions for baggage that is guaranteed for the cabin down to 50cm by 40cm by 20cm – including handles, pockets and wheels – to a total of just 40 litres. There is no weight limit on cabin baggage.

You're allowed one bag (of either the 'old' or 'new' dimensions) free of charge. If the bag only meets the 'old' rules it might have to go into the hold but it's still within your free allowance. (i.e. no charge):

Flew to Corfu in May with Easyjet. Test cages were the same ones any other airline uses. ie. 55*40*20.
One chap had his case tested and got rejected because the top carrying handle wouldn't fit in the cage, even though the case itself was within the limits. Must have been less than a n inch protruding.

How long before they charge extra for oversize / weight passengers themselves?

I think that a problem the airlines didn't consider when they started charging for luggage to go in the hold was that many passengers would just start using carry on luggage only. I went to Amsterdam with Easyjet earlier this year and on the flight home they were asking people to voluntarily put their hand luggage in the hold as there was too much hand luggage for the plane. In the end they just started taking cases off people and putting them in the hold. I did notice that it seemed to be mainly men who had carry on cases - presumably their only luggage. I take a large squashy shoulder bag which easily fits under the seat in front - though I do have a case in the hold aswell!

They announced that on our flight home from Malta too - so many people are taking hand only - or larger hand because hold bags are now - £36 - each... that the overhead lockers are full up before everyone's got on.

They are aiming to charge for having two legs, apparently, one of their end-games when it comes to increasing revenue of the basic ticket.

Removal of legs will remove a lot of weight from the cabin and limit movement around it, making the job for the Easyjet crew that bit easier to move up and down the aisles, no pests of customers in the way to block the efficient hand out of the pay-as-you-go pastic food, drink and duty-excessive.

It`s a low cost carrier that`s what they do. When you check in online, revenue management pre-assign your seats for you (usually 24 hours before). That`s the seat you see that you can keep or change if you want. I flew Air Asia last year and they deliberately split us (a party of 2) up when they pre-assigned the seats so that we had to pay to sit together. What with one thing and another, the fare ended up almost twice the initial price. It`s all a game and you have to try and beat their system.

thing is some of these low cost airlines are not when you actually work it out. as for charging for extra persons weight, they do, it's called buy two tickets, i read that some place.
