Hi there ! I think the first word you're looking for would be "sophomore" . It's a term designating a second-year student in a US college ( derived from the greek Sophia = wisdom ...but I'm afraid I don't know about the second bit ! ). A sorority is an association of female students in college, the kind that is named after greek letters, like "Alpha Gama" or such. Hope this helps !

Is it where they do stupid initiation ceremonies?Sounds very silly too me.Do all schools do it or just "posh" ones?
That would be it, yes ! Where they do the secret ceremonies. Although I guess it's more or less a cover for drinking feasts actually...I dont know about posh or not, I just knew the meaning of the words by chance ! lol

Sophomore refers to the second year of either high school or college (university).  The terms for first through fourth year of both are:  freshman, sophomore, junior, senior.

A sorority is the female equivalent of a fraternity.  A club of sorts, usually designated by Greek letters (Alpha Beta Psi or similar).

sorority comes from the latin for sister.

sorority Look up sorority at Dictionary.com
1532, "body of women united for some purpose," from M.L. sororitas "sisterhood, of or pertaining to sisters," from L. soror "sister" (see sister). OED 2nd ed. lists first reference for sense of "women's society in a college or university" as c.1900, but they existed at least 20 years before this.

I'm an American...and I'm just dropping a line to say you all are correct and you've it the nail right on the head with your explanations of sophomore and sorority....sororities are certainly big at American universities, but I am just not the "click-joining" type of girl....sororities tend to carry with them a kind-of generalization...such as a certain Delta Gamma being a group of mostly blonde, elementary education majors with big boobs and a small brain....

oops, did I say that?
