A sorority is the female equivalent of a fraternity. A club of sorts, usually designated by Greek letters (Alpha Beta Psi or similar).

1532, "body of women united for some purpose," from M.L. sororitas "sisterhood, of or pertaining to sisters," from L. soror "sister" (see sister). OED 2nd ed. lists first reference for sense of "women's society in a college or university" as c.1900, but they existed at least 20 years before this.
I'm an American...and I'm just dropping a line to say you all are correct and you've it the nail right on the head with your explanations of sophomore and sorority....sororities are certainly big at American universities, but I am just not the "click-joining" type of girl....sororities tend to carry with them a kind-of generalization...such as a certain Delta Gamma being a group of mostly blonde, elementary education majors with big boobs and a small brain....
