'Baby' has been used since the early 19th century - especially in American slang - to mean an attractive person. It referred only to girls originally, but has since come to be applied to both genders.
The idea was doubtless used to suggest something small which needed protection and love, just like an actual baby.

I suppose if you substitute the word BABY in the song Be My Baby for a grammatical equivelent it would sound quite bad.
Be my, be my little bundle of nappy wearing, s**t producing, noisey, vomitty, sticky fingered, wrinkled smelly, crying, expensive little angel.
Don't think it would sell.
