my dad was in ground crew during the war and also a pow in the far east, he left the RAF around 1952 and I have come across his Raf tie as it has his number on the back, but I am a bit confused as it is black so unless it has changed to the striped one my question is do they still use the black one
I was in the WRAF from 1964 on, and it was still black.
A little anecdote for you .....
Officer...Airman, do you know why airmen wear black ties?
Airman, No Sir..
Officer,,, it's because Airmen are dead from the neck up.
Airman.... Sir, is that why officers wear black socks ?
During the war a plain tie would have been issued as part of the service dress. Being in the Army my father had a plain khaki one, he probably bought his Royal Artillery regimental tie at a later date to wear at re-unions. A plain black tie is probably still issued to RAF personnel at enlistment, as they wouldn't be assigned to a squadron immediately.
