What si an appropriate adjective?

I am looking for an adjective or a noun phrase to describe a person who
due to his/her education focused on one subject or two (instead of many)
is unable to speak about things other
than what his/her education was about.Quite odten this person doesn't
understand some words because this person doesn't read.
In Polish we call such a person as'ograniczony'(limited or with
brain restrictions), but do not know the English equivalent
and the dictionary offers something irrelevant.

The Germans have the wonderful term Fachidiot, but I have tried in vain to find an adequate translation. The German term is sometimes used in English texts, often with a long explanation, such as "he who knows a lot in his area of expertise but is a total idiot when it comes to other areas".
"Nerd" and "academic idiot" are two translations I came across, but neither of them is quite right.

it seems a bit like looking for a translation of sympathique or sympatisch - there isnt a word in English.
