Does keyskill english need to be passed before proper education?

Hi i have a frind whos daughter has moved over from portugal. She is 16 and speaks semi to good english. her reading, writing and spelling is also at an avrage. my friend wants to enroll his daughter into education. before this happens however is there a keyskills course she will have to under go before proper education. like a course or something so that she can show she has the ability to show off her english skills so she can study properly. if anybody knows what i am talking about or can help me out i would be very greatfull. thanks.

I don't know if it depends on what course at college she will be studying, by it was a condition of my son's course that he and others attend a Study keyskills course alongside the chosen course. He was born in UK and has a good command of the English Language, so I don't think it would be necessary as you say that she speaks good English etc.

If she is 16 or over she will probably be given an assessment at her chosen place of study to see what her level of English is like. 

There are three strands to this; Speaking&Listening, Reading and Writing.  Depending on her chosen course of study she needs to be at either  Entry Level 3, Level 1 or Level 2 Literacy or ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages.)  When she has been assessed they can advise her further.
