Butcher's Compliments

I've heard on LBC that a 25 year old rang a butchers to order some meat and the assistant said that she had a sexy voice. She immediately took offence, complained to the butchers and said that this remark was sexist and made her feel uncomfortable etc., etc.

I think this is totally over the top, she needs to lighten up, get a life and learn how to accept compliments. If someone had said this to me, I would be delighted. What do others think?

Sorry if I've put this in the wrong section!

We've created a nation of pathetic people who are looking for any reason to 'feel offended'. They're everywhere including AB towers.

Frankly, had he said it to me I must admit, I would be slightly concerned!
It's all in the context.
He can reasonably well ascertain where she lives. I can appreciate someone being worried about a random remark like this. We don't live in a carry-on film set.
Soon, nobody will say anything to anybody for fear of offending them!
I'm offended that you'd think I'm so easily offended...

It might also depend on the way he said it, of course -- if it sounded just a little bit creepy you might well be a bit put out.
A butcher's assistant told a costumer on the telephone that she has a "sexy voice"............so?...........what IS the big deal? He clearly knew her.

that's the last time she'll ask them if they've got big sausages
Just a thought, and turning the problem around: what if the woman had randomly said to the butcher: your voice makes you sound like you've lost your virility
OTT, yes
But also as random and as valid as the initial remark
And this seems to have been in a working situation, not a private individual phoning the butcher for some sex chat.
And he's not Sid James even if he thinks she's Barbara windsor.

Svejk - your post is nearly correct. It should read " feel offended so that they can ask for compensation".
.
// Frankly, had he said it to me I must admit, I would be slightly concerned //

but on AB this is REAL LIFE and he didnt Balders !

Staff have to deal with humourless women as well as everyone else.
Employer should say he has given the employee advice....

[ oddly enough I have had a female butchers assistant refuse to serve me on the grounds of me queue-jumping. And I had a really odd conversation with her, odder than any I have had on AB . That included no 4 behind me insisting she had seen me do it even tho she wasnt in the shop at the time . Kafkaesque I called it to general lack of understanding]

Perhaps women go all funny when they go into or ring a butcher's.
She didn't like what she herd. He made a missteak. He may have wanted to meat her. Let's not beef up this story.
// that's the last time she'll ask them if they've got big sausages//
yeah that was how I knew Balders has never been chatted up by a butcher
sounds like being whistled at by a builder - except it's by someone who knows where you live. I'd find that creepy.
On the other hand, it's perhaps a good sign that at least people feel able to speak up these days if they've been offended. Some, naturally, take it too far -- but I'd rather live in a society where people are too easily offended but are able to complain than one where all manner of offensive comments pass by with impunity.
Jim - as you get older - since I know you are very young AND very bright,
honestly you think: Life is too short......
Perhaps, but I'm still young and naive :)
But would you be offended if I said it to you, Baldric..... ;-)

Perhaps I'm going to have to be more careful......I love different voices and though I don't think I use the word...sexy...I will tell a stranger on the phone that he has a gorgeous voice or accent.

That's always led to a bit of banter.....not one man has taken offence.

If she didn't really like it a quick put down would have sufficed......

If too many women react like this men will be so reluctant to compliment us or to have some innocent banter that women like me.....who are happy with that will be miffed........☺

And anyway....butchers, in my experience, have always used banter and cheek in their shops.....
On the subject, not heard that sexy voice of yours in ages gness... :P
// Gness: I love different voices and though I don't think I use the word...sexy...I will tell a stranger on the phone that he has a gorgeous voice or accent. //

this is something called synaesthesia - interpreting a sound impulse as another sense - usually sight.....

would be a good defence if you found yourself at your age in court ......
Then you'll have to phone me, Jim....though sexy wasn't the word you used to describe my voice.....can't recall what it was now..... :-(
