It may not be just a wind-up, Jk, but at best it's just a modern urban slang joke. Not even The Oxford English Dictionary - which doesn't shy away from 'rude' words - has any such reference under 'dude'. I doubt that you'd find any reputable website confirming it either.
It may possibly be that an Arabic slang word for 'penis' happens to sound like 'dude', Arabic lands being most closely associated with camels.

..did a google or two and it does appear that Dude has been linked to a camels "bits"..one site said it originated in the "wild west" and was a name for a HORSES wotsit...I know the word dude crops up a lot in western movies so maybe that could be true.........

Maybe it's because cowboys thought that dudes - in the correct meaning of "dandified easterners" - were complete penises!

Dood spelt this way is egyptian for camel poo. The word dude was first coined by Oscar Wilde and is a combination of the words Dandy and attitude.

The Oscar Wilde origin for 'dude' is a nice story, El M, but sadly it has nothing to support it...at least according to the scholars at The Oxford English Dictionary. They claim it was an artificial bit of slang that arose in New York in the 1880s and that there is no trace of its actual origin. I'm sure that - if they can't find the origin - nobody else can.
