Discharging Yourself From Hospital.
50 Answers
How easy is it to discharge yourself from hospital? Apart from when being sanctioned is there any other way a doctor or mental health professional could legally stop me from leaving?
He's told the crisis team that I've said "If I go home, I'll harm myself". That is a complete lie; I said "Staying here is seriously affecting my mental health and I don't feel stable being here". He also said I was aggressive which is untrue - I was merely vocalising how I felt inside - nothing was directed at him or any other member of staff.
Any help would be grateful, thanks.

They surroundings here are very unstable at the moment and I'm having to explain everything over and over which is getting me worked up. I told them I'd be safe at home and now just to cover their own back they've just made my life so much harder.
I can't see where I've done anything wrong?

Hospitals are not prisons, Diz. Unless you are sectioned under the Mental Health Act you are free to walk out whenever you want.
Trouble is that if you do, you run the risk of seriously annoying the medical and nursing staff....and you really don't want to do that.
I know it can seem as though they are not listening to you and you can feel that they are not treating you appropriately, but they will be doing their best.
No one in that hospital is purposely trying to harm you.
Try to keep that thought to the front of your mind and don't get into shouting matches with folks.
I do not mean that you should not be assertive about your treatment or care, but there is a big difference between assertive and aggressive...so don't cross it.

// Canary42 *** doctors think they're God. It's endemic in today's NHS//
*** I dont know where C42 has got that idea from.
Hospitals are not a prison and all you do is walk to the door and go back home. BUT - Dizmo you have already got some serious things wrong with you ( pseudopancreatic cyst with or without an associated neutropenia )
and so ... Home is bad and Hospital is good
The fact you can do something doesnt mean you should
You need to be in Hospital.

I've spoken to the ward sister. She's apologised for the doctor. The only reason they want to keep me is because they think I'm a danger to myself at home. The hospital were just waiting for the crisis team. I've explained the situation and she's gone to get her senior doctor to sign off the paperwork for discharging.
Cheers for your advice all. I never crossed the line psst passion to aggression. I'll be out of here in a bit. I'm feeling ok and I've still for my appointment with Sheffield hospital on Thursday.
