Getting Rid Of Rats

Neighbour had rats under floorboards in living room - pest control person managed to get poison down for them. Result: overpowering smell of dead rat followed by hordes of bluebottles all over the house!
Now - 6 months later, gnawing scratching noises from same area - couldnt live with same result if pest control put down poison, says she'd rather live with the vermin than the bluebottles.....
Looking for source of entry, only thing they could come up with is drain system running under concrete path...
These ultra sound devices on the market are not 100% reliable (according to Wikipedia) the rats dont like them but learn to live with them or vacate the property for short time and return - of if they have babies they just stay!
Anybody out there with alternative remedy.please help!

One would have hoped that the last catcher would have identified and blocked all potential points of access. Apart from opening a larger entry and sending a predator in, unsure what you can do save for traps and poison.

Thanks Old Geezer - catcher concluded that having checked all round the property, it must come from the drainage system. When grate opened and no
obvious signs, he reckons further down system which means ripping up a
patio and concrete run from house to street!

As an ex Pest Controller for many years, don't wear yourself out trying to find how they get in, if it isn't obvious then you will most likely never find out. Just deal with the issue when it arrives, remind your pest controller that it is a part of his job and responsibility to find and remove rodent carcasses. To be honest, getting a smell and flies after the rats die is not that common, especially during the winter. Traps can be effective in some situations, however, rats are really not that easy to trap like mice. I would stick to putting down poisons. Don't delay, dealing with the issue, rats breed very rapidly, a lot easier to deal with a pair of rats than a whole family.
