Driving this morning I had the radio on and a reporter was outside Kensington Palace, asking many people if they remembered where they were when Diana died.
I actually remember very well. I'd fallen asleep with the TV on, and at some point I woke up and could hear the words 'death' and 'royal ' etc so half asleep I just assumed it was the Queen Mother. What a shame I thought, turned TV off and went to bed. I woke up the next morning and put the news on, expecting to see the QM pop up on screen, and instead it was Diana's face. I just couldn't believe it. Everyone seemed to be in utter shock...and so was I tbh.

I was on the way to the bathroom early, when I spotted the Newspaper headline.

A few have said where they were on this thread.

Hubby woke me late in the night (Saturday) if I remember correctly to say that there had been an accident - I said to hubby that she would probably want to live without him - when I woke at about 8 it was all over the TV that she was dead.
We were living in London at that time.
Same place as most ... in bed.
Up in the loft doing something or other- couldn't understand why radio 1 was playing some very unradio1-like long instrumental piece. I'm sure I then went playing football. Seems odd now that the game started on time as normal
My baby used to wake about 5am every morning so I heard when I turned the TV on while feeding him. I did cry.
We were in Mass.

We didn't have a regular paper delivery on Sunday, and don't turn on the TV or radio, so the first we heard was when the priest said about the tragic news of Princess Diana's death.

We were absolutely stunned.
At home, woke just before 7, put tv on. Jaw dropped.
Went upstairs to tell Mr Alba that Di and Dodi were deid as well as the driver.
He was in bathroom having a shave before work.
(wet shave, not a good way to break the news)
from bedroom t bathroom
s/o had left the radio on

so I woke the diana adulation usual suspects and said you better turn on the tv - and they were glued there for the next seven days

I was on tea urn duty and imported boxes of paper hankies

smow
everyone (tv stations etc ) had ended broadcasts and gone to bed
and they were told to turn the transmitters back on
and surfers at 0300 might surf past - -
which you did whilst you were half awake ....
I am still VERY suspicious that it was a Royal plot of some sort.

I have no idea what time it was when I woke up tbh. Just remember hearing about royal death. Wasn't till I actually looked at the screen hours later I realised what had happened. And yes I did cry. She was a young mum and all I could think about was her kids.
I was only a child. I remember getting up and watching Nickelodeon and it kept telling us of Breaking News and to change channel. I didn't quite understand if it was something I should do obviously didn't know what to expect so waited for Nungate to come down. That's when we found out.
Are some people answering where they were when they found out about Di's death?

I would have thought most people were in bed.
In Singapore. I`d just got up at about 3 pm after partying for much of the night. Watched it on BBC World or CNN and I was offered condolences by the bellboy in the lift on the way out that night.

Talbot - good point. I should have said where were you when you heard that Diana had died...
Woke up late on Sunday morning still hungover from the party the night before, staring unbelievably at Sky News about Diana. Talk about shocked, yes I cried.
On the Monday on the tube to work, most people were crying, it was a very sombre mood.
I always have R4 on in bed, and I heard the news as it was breaking early morning. At first I thought I was dreaming, came downstairs and the tv coverage confirmed it. Have to say I was extremely upset for some time afterwards.
I heard when I got up in the morning and switched the radio on - on - so very shocked.
Around 5:30am... at a car boot sale!
Working in America at the time, staying with friends in Savannah on the way back from a rowing competition. Am afraid I think we shocked them by how underwhelmed we were in our response to the news. Similarly, our work colleagues were very surprised that we were happy to work on the day of the funeral. My most abiding memory of that was that all our patients were watching it on the T.V.
