No doubt there has been a thread about this back in the day.

Is it not a tad irresponsible for the Govt to declare that cars over a certain age no longer require MOTs? Yes, super, responsible owners can elect to still have an MOT but what about all the rest?

I think part of the problem was that pre-1960 vehicles were not realy 'testable' to modern standards & so the rules had to be applied flexibly anyway.

No-one is actually going to drive a 60 year old vehicle for day-to-day use (apart from a few enthusiasts who will have it in good order anyway) - and I'm not that bothered about testing the 'occasional hobby use' vehicles - which will still be covered by the Police enforcing roadworthiness rules.

It's highly likely that these cars would never pass an MOT test due to the emissions. Most of them have a value well above scrappage and the owners take very good care of them.
They will still be prosecuted if the vehicle is not in a roadworthy condition.

Have to disagree with you as enthusiasts/owners can and do miss MOT failures.

sunny dave, from this May cars registered before 1978 will not be liable for the MOT - cars 40 years and older.

Ah - I didn't know that change had actually been scheduled - I only saw it as a consultation.

In which case I'm much less happy - there are a lot of 'old bangers' from that era still around & I'd like them scrutinised (even if just for basic safety) on a yearly basis.

Given there is vehicle in our garage older than me (yes, it's that old) I am not impressed with the Govts decision and will continue to MOT.

Personally I do not consider cars of 40 yrs 'old' and a good few are still used as everyday runabouts.

I think that cars between 3 and 10 years should be MOTd every two years, as they are in many European countries

It was only implemented a few months ago so no statistics will have been collated and processed yet.

I have to say I almost never see a 40-year-old car on the streets, though maybe there are more outside London?

Eccles, you’ve stated that you know of people who own such cars that have missed MOTs. I’m asking whether you (or anyone else) knows of any problems relating to this.

By the way, it doesn’t come in until May this year.

Where have I stated that Zacs?

Cars up to May are having their last mandated MOT.

I still feel it is an irresponsible move.
