Are the European and American phonetic alphabets Identical?

It depends what you mean by phonetic alphabet. Do you mean alpha - Zulu to distinguish spoken words or do you mean the phonetic alphabet in dictionaries which which indicate the sound of the letter?

In either case I haven't a clue.

By the way, shouldn't phonetic be spelt fonnettick?

As far as I am aware we both use the Nato phonetic alphabet.

Thanks all.
I ask because an old friend who was a military man says they use/d slightly different versions. I don't know how far back he was meaning though, assuming he's correct.

Certainly until the Second World War the UK one was different, A Able, C Charlie etc, I believe we switched on the formation of NATO

There have been many variations in the past, but the NATO alphabet was pretty much universally adopted in the fifties, and all others had more or less "ceased to be" by the sixties.
