I've never ever heard the phrase On The QT anywhere except on this site - is it a regionalism or have I just led a very sheltered life?

It's become an Americanism though the derivation is from Victorian Britain. If you managed to avoid watching or reading LA Confidential you could have missed it alltogether. Whether that counts as a sheltered life or not is another matter!

It was a popular expression during WW2 - I remember my parents using it, and I've used it.

And I recall a top shelf magazine in the 70s called QT, because its pronounced 'Cutie' and thats what they featured.

None of this is related to either the popular TV show called Q8 , or the petrol stations called Q8 (Kuwait)
