My mom used to say 'It's like Carney's Lodging House in here' in various situations such as if someone had gone outside and left the door wide open or had the lights on at night but hadn't closed the curtains or if the living room was untidy.
Does anyone know the origin of this, please?

I am not familiar with that particular phrase but similar ones in the NE of England to describe the same state of disorder were: 'Paddy's Market' and 'Casey's Court'. Obviously these were all institutions noted for their general untidiness.
