or even ****** as a newt, I have never ever seen a newt in real life never mind one thats ******! I dunno I think someone must have made it up whilst they were funk and druck or under the affluence of incahol.

I used to keep newts in a tank at home in the North East - they're great in water, but see one walk on dry land, and they are not well co-ordianted - someone obviously decided they looked drunk.

The "drunk as" comparison, is itself a staple of popular speech, and has been ever since one of the first known examples, Chaucer's "drunk as a mouse" of 1386. You also have variations such as "drunk as a skunk" "drunk as a bat" and "drunk as a boiled owl," although "drunk as a wheelbarrow" (1709) has a nice surrealistic ring to it.

Pi$$ed is the most common slang word for drunk in the UK, so it was only natural that the phrase should evolve.

Nor is it very likely that an actual source will ever be isolated. 'Drunk as a rat', for instance, is centuries old but why/where/when that became the modern 'rat-bottomed' - except that it isn't 'bottomed', of course - I don't expect we'll ever know! No more will we, I imagine, as regards your own version.

Where I'm from a popular term to describe someone who is drunk is "rat ar$ed" if you watch a rat walking directly away from you you will see why.

When a rat walks it kind of wiggles it's ar$e from side to side a bit like drunk does when he cant walk in straight line.

Actually in conversations with some friends, we have all at some point been 'ratted' or 'battered' after a few babychams. Amongst other's of course.
