You also have variations such as "drunk as a skunk" "drunk as a bat" and "drunk as a boiled owl," although "drunk as a wheelbarrow" (1709) has a nice surrealistic ring to it.

Nor is it very likely that an actual source will ever be isolated. 'Drunk as a rat', for instance, is centuries old but why/where/when that became the modern 'rat-bottomed' - except that it isn't 'bottomed', of course - I don't expect we'll ever know! No more will we, I imagine, as regards your own version.
