// North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Philip Allott had faced sustained criticism for urging women to be "streetwise" in a radio interview.
The backlash culminated in the unanimous vote passed by the county's Police, Fire and Crime panel.
In response Mr Allott said he would "do the decent thing" and leave his post.
The Conservative commissioner had faced multiple calls to stand down since 1 October, when he told BBC Radio York that women should educate themselves about powers of arrest, saying they should know "when they can be arrested and when they can't be arrested".//

There are certain people we have to trust.
Doctors, Police, Judges.
For a man in charge of overseeing a police force to say the public must be wary and more sussed of them is a abdication of his duty.
He is supposed to make sure the Police live up to the high standards we expect of them. To say we should be streetwise when we encounter them is an admission of his own failure.
It is remarkable that someone who'd utter such a crass comment could ever become police commissioner. As you say Gromit, eejit!
I have yet to see any good reports about these Police Commisioners.
I don't doubt he said it with the best of intentions, but it did little to engender confidence in the police. I'm not sure it's worthy of resignation though. As you say, it's a 'daft' comment.
I'm struggling to understand what he said wrong. Surely we should all be 'streetwise' as we dont live in an ideal world?
Oh, and I agree Danny. The post should be abolished.
They take the place of the Police Watch committees which used to be council subcommittees - I think

and didnt work very well ( toward the end) - Manchester was powerless under Anderton ( arresting prostitutes, ignoring heroin trade(*) and completely failing Stalker)

(*) he really thought if he left them alone, they would all kill each other and the problem wd solve itself
Yes, good riddance.
