I've been working through this book for a few years. It starts with topics like complex numbers, Riemann surfaces and goes on to string and twistor theory.
It has a heavy maths content but is not for professional mathematicians.
If he's already whipped through things like "A brief history" it should do the job!
not too much physics in it, but i'd recommend
"Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid". An old but classic book that all geeks should read or have read.
Failing that, go for the elegant universe as loosehead suggests, brief history, the "mr tompkins" books, something like that.
