what does the phrase "dead man walking mean"

Its what they say on death row, I think it just means that they have been sentenced to die?

does it not mean , the walk to the 'chair' to death, therefore a dead man walking ?

It is a practice in some prisons for the death row prisoners to say "Dead man walking ...." as a condemned prisoner walks to the death chamber.

Don't know if you watched The Green Mile last night, but I have just found out that the actor who played Del died in 2003, aged only 50. Not relevant to your question, I know, but thought you might like to know.
