Whereas 18 is nowadays considered the age of majority, it used to be 21...ie when you became an adult in Britain. As an adult, you were considered free to come and go as you pleased rather than according to your parents' wishes. Thus, you were now entitled to "the key of the door".
Seems to be any age these day.
Roman women wore keys on their belts to show they ran the household. Anglo-Saxon women after them did also, but wore more decorative ornate ones.
