So IRRITATING!

Does anyone else find the expression, 'Tell me about it' annoying? It's a stupid phrase, cosidering the fact that you just have 'told them about it'!

I confess it doesn't bother me in the slightest. Now that Australian / student habit of raising your voice at the end of each sentence, that sends me into orbit instantly! Or should that be instantly?

Okay, but seriously I do find it one of the most irritating expressions and it seems to have appeared from nowhere in the last year or two. The problem is, most people would rather not excercise their brains too much and it's a lot easier to speak in cliches than bother to use original constructions. Same applies to the flood of bland entertainment in which we are drowning these days, from soap operas to pop stars - nothing to stimulate the mind, just maintain our positions as post-Thatcher drones happy to do, buy and consume what we are told, by our new corporate leaders.

I find 'is there anything else you need at all?' irritating. Why 'at all'? Why not just 'Is there anything else you need?'?

I think the other one that irritates me is 'what are you like?' How do you answer that!

the other thing similar that annoys me is when you tell someone something and they say "Do you know what I mean?". completely nonsensical as they didn't say anything in the first place, and of course I know what I mean as I just said it!!

How about "like you do!" which some people seem to insist on adding on at intervals during a monolog.

'Twenty-four seven'. Also, when they put a mimed phone to their ear and say they'll phone you, when it's quiet enough just to say it without the sign language. Just one more...'To be pefectly honest.....' often seems to mean, 'excuse me, but I'm just about to spill out a load of bull**** !

The American habit of saying, "Who is this?" on the telephone. They know who THIS is. They want to know who THAT is.
