If French were*, to learn from past mistakes.
Very interesting Xollob - very true about the Spanish language influence and the American's relative 'archaic' sentence structure - we're taught completely differently in school!  
french in this country is probably dying out in this country. i spent nearly ten years learning it, and left school with a D. MANY THOSE IN MY CLASS WHO GOT A'S wouldnt have clue if they were being spoken in french. all of it is 5 to 8 year old stuff. if theyd allowed us to spanish without the french, i wouldve chucked it in year 10! in french youve got all this masc.and fem. business. like 'la', 'le', 'l' 'and another (which i cant remember) 4 different ways to say 'the'! it hell!

If it's '5 to 8 year old stuff' my friend, why did you get a D?

Yet American English is the Most recognizable outside of the US and UK due to pop culture and media so it became a norm when English is Mention.
