there are certain phrases i wish to irradicate from society as they have no use except to annoy me

"To Be Honest" why oh why unless your a pathological liar do you need to tell me that you are about to be honest? its as if everything you have said before that was a lie and only now are they about to tell the truth. in the same vain

"to be fair" again is the person saying this in some way unfair? and again they are saying that to let you know on this instance they are going to be fair??

but by far the worst is "at the end of the day" yes because after that whatever they say only applies at midnight? listen to people who use this phrase, most of them morons. this phrase at least can be used in a proper sentence but i have only ever heard it used once properly. please someone agree with me?

I grew up in the east end so the one i hate is....

'So she turned around and said this'
'And i turned around and said that'
'Then she turned around and said this'

Where they dancing? im getting dizzy!

my worst work related one......

''I've got this customer on the phone......'' - we work in a call centre, where else is the customer going to be???

really irritating for me - but probably not to anyone else out there!!

Englishbird - I agree so much on "do you know what I mean?", it had a life changing effect on me!

Allow me to explain: I used to work pen-pushing for an insurance company in Birmingham, going nowhere not very fast, sat opposite this girl "WM" who finished every explanatory sentence with "d'you know what I mean?"

One day it just annoyed me so much, I got up and resigned on the spot with no job to go to, purely because of that phrase giving me a definig moment that I was working with idiots. After this I went back to college, onto Uni, now ending up successfully self employed and loving my work.

I often look back and think about WM - I'm sure she is still there being just as thick - I suppose I could have just asked for a desk move, but her stupidity had an indirect bearing on where life has taken me since....I guess I owe her a drink!

Don't get me started on "Turned round and said....." - this box won't give me space to post a rant that such a phrase deserves! ;-)

i am in total agreement with you! phrases such as these, used in such a way as to be meaningless, and 'sentence fillers' used by people trying to sound more intelligent than they are, really annoy me. "Like for like" is another one i really take offence to - hardly ever used in any sort of proper context... i think "at the end of the day" may in fact be some kind of a chav motto...!
ah yes! that may be one of the most inexplicable ones! "and he turned round to me and said..." sometimes it can happen so many times in a person's narrative they must be spinning like tops.
did anyone els find yellowduck's example of logic-free grammar rather funny? i nearly got busted being on this site while at work because i was laughing. my work is just not that funny.
