Regional Dialects

Has anyone ever done any academic research into the different forms of regional dialects in the UK? Possibly with a specific reference to the borrowing of words between the dialects and even borrowing by RP of 'fashionable' words from regional variations.

e.g. I was told that the late Queen Mother was famous for borrowing fashionable words and phrases from regional varieties in the 40's and 50's

There has been endless academic research on dialects/phonetics, which often go into excruciatingly fine detail. I have a linguistics degree and speak from experience!!

Visit any academic library and you'll find a lot of hefty volumes reports in the relevant section - you can probably find some content online too. It has often been fashionable and hilarious in royal/aristocratic circles to borrow turns of phrase from 'the plebs'. 'Don'tcha know' was a popular one; and using 'what' ungrammatically - Sheridan's full of them. And we know Princess Anne favoured the palare term 'Naff off'.

Watched a programme about Polari and almost died of shock when they said what 'Naff' meant. Very interesting though.x
