What is this saying off: 'He's a very nice man' 'He's a very, very nice man?' I'm sure its off the telly from about 5 years ago?

Yeah, definately the AA man, in fact in the recent advert with all the AA guys sitting in the car looking for the best insurance quote, the driver says something like "They're very nice men" harking back to the older ads.

dick emery the comedian was the first to use the phrase the AA started using it later

Steak2, I think you're thinking of Dick Emery's character "Hettie" who used to say "You are awful, but I like you!", which is a substantially different from "He's a nice man, a very nice man!"

That, as I recall, was indeed from the AA commercials of the late 70's / early 80's and, I believe, was entirely original.
