Because the original ones were made of horn, whereas they are nowadays almost invariably made of plastic.

Historically, cattle horn was a very useful, easily worked, and readily available material, and was made into mugs, spoons, boxes, and those thingys for helping you get your shoes on. Metals were expensive by comparison, so no one would dream of using it to make so simple an item when horn would do the job perfectly well.

thankyou , thought it was somthing like that I didn't know it was cattle horn though. I am finding out about so many things from all you abers I wish I had found this site years ago
