This is an old saying from the Middle English - the 12th to 15th centuries.

It is 'lo and behold'. Literally it means 'look and look' but was used as an expression of suddeness and surprise.

"I was walking down the road, minding my own business, and lo and behold! An egg fell on my head!"

Just by the way - am I right in thinking the word 'lo' was stood on its head and became the exclamation mark? ... sorry ... !
