What do they mean when a person is called a 'Nerd'?

A nerd is a stupid person in US slang; or it can be used in an expression like 'computer nerd' which means someone who is obssessed with (or good at using) computers, but useless with social relationships. Its first known usage is in Dr Seuss's 1950 book "If I Ran the Zoo" -- though obviously not in this context. (Source: Dictionary.com)

Hi, I'm an American. A "nerd" is not 'a stupid person' in American slang-- it is exactly the opposite!!! A nerd is an extremely intelligent person who also lacks social skills.

Nonono!!!! A nerd is someone who is very cleaver but doesnt care about it, and can be popular even! They can have relationships, like me. these defenitions are of a geek. Different from a nerd. I am a nerd, and have a girlfriend and i am very sociable and well liked.
