Where does the phrase 'The World is your oyster' come from and what does it mean?

"Why, then, the world's mine oyster, which I with sword will open" was the original version. It's from Shakespeare's 'The Merry Wives of Windsor' and means that all the world's potential is available to you if only you have the 'key' to get at it, just as you need an opening-device to get at the contents of an oyster-shell.
