Does anyone know how the saying "Going round the back doubles", meaning "taking a short cut" originated? What's a "Back Double"?

I think it refers to the alley between two sets of terraced houses, each of which back onto the alley - 'back double', or 'double-back', as in the immortal Ruttles song Double-back Alley.
