We know rubber neckers are people who stare at accidents as they drive past, but why are they so-called? Ta!

Because after they have stared out of the side window at the accident, their heads whip round forwards again, as if their necks were made of rubber.
The term originated in the U.S.and was used to refer to any tourists, they would try hard not to miss any sites pointed out to them, so their heads would swivel round often, as if their necks were rubber. The term has more latterly been used to refer to people who gawp at road accidents, for the same reason.
We still use the term to mean tourists down here in Southern England. Grockles is another popular term for them.
