Why does pronouciation of these 2 words not Rhyme?. I always say the former to ryhme with the latter and then get berated by the trendies!

For the same reason that 'rover', 'hover' and 'lover' don't rhyme.
It's called an ' eyerhyme '
reminded me of the little boy who came home and said he was Pontius Pilates in the Christmas play
shame it dosent rhyme ... im sure the frosties ad would have shoehorned it in somewhere!
Pirates is an old word we're used to saying

Pilates it a trendy load of cr^p that no-one can say
Because the exercise regime is named after its founder, who was German. (Pontius Pilate's name does rhyme with pirate, as far as I've ever heard.)

well, it's not really the English language to blame at all, it's just a person's name and that's how he pronounced it.
