Why do we refer to elderly couples as Darby and Joan?

An 18th century song contained these lines:

"Old Darby with Joan by his side, You've often regarded with wonder; He's dropsical, she is sore-eyed Yet they're never happy asunder."

So, ever since then, any devoted elderly couple have been given those names.
