AKA 'Thinking outside the box'

Can anyone think of a good alternative to this phrase? I'm having to encourage working parties to come up with good ideas but I would like a better phrase to use this one is too 'jargon'.

Lateral thinking is the obvious one. I think in German they say "um die Ecke denken" = round-the-corner thinking = or even Dreieckdenken - triangular thinking.

Thanks QM! Worryingly I'm sure some of them wouldn't understand what 'lateral' meant. Please keep ideas coming guys. I really don't want to stand and do my 'pep' talks sounding like David Brent.

Brainstorming is a good one.

It is where people are encouraged to come up with all sorts of ideas, even outlandish ones (without critisism or comment).

These outlandish ideas may prompt people to come up with other ideas, some of which can be put into practice.

Lateral basically means to the side, some definitions include 'pertaining to the side' and 'away from the midline of the body' is a popular definition.
