Now, EATS would fit (East and South split by At), but I'm not happy with it as I can't see where the 'faster' element comes in.
EATH - Scottish adjective/adverb meaning easy or easily - also fits but doesn't match the clue; neither does EFTS (unless my knowledge of newts is inadequate)...

Interesting, though, as this clue comes from another local crossword - on the Isle of Man - and was only published on Tuesday this week, whereas the previous posting was last Saturday.
