When I was a kid I can remember my dad telling me about his best man doing that hilarious routine during his speech, you must know the one... "I was sitting down this morning and just scribbled a few words down..." and then proceeding to pull a toilet roll out of his pocket...

I was at a wedding a few years ago when the best man did the same thing (almost 50 years later). There was an almost audible groan as he started to say... "I was just sitting down... etc."

You know when you feel really embarassed for someone?!?!

Whatever you do... don't do that one!!! It was all downhill from there!!!

There was as debate about this subject on Radio Two this week and Amanda Patel, former Press Officer for the Tory Party gave very similar advice to that offered by Einstein - being funny to strangers is very difficult - if you don't know the reaction you'll get, leave it to the experts. The phrase "be brief, be sincere and be seated" says it all.
