Mum or Mom?

I use Mum, but one of my exs used Mom. Its always bothered me that he didnt realise it should be mum and I thought his family were alone in this in the Uk. I did see someone using it online today from Birmigham, so is Mum or Mom a regional thing? You never see Mom birthday cards

I use mum but I think it is a regional thing. I know people in Londonderry who say mammy, which I found weird!

Where I live we say "Mam", and there are sometimes, not often, a few cards in shops with "Mam" but like everywhere else, they usually say "Mum" or "Mother" - which is what I call my mam when she's in trouble ha ha

I have a friend, originally from the Midlands, who says 'Mom', too, and i think it sounds SOOOOOO wrong... but presumably she thinks the same about me and my 'Mother'...!

'Mom' is used here in the U.S. almost exclusively. One doesn't hear 'Mum' but 'Mommy" comes in second is my guess...

Everyone I know says Mum, admittedly my friends dont really extend much farther north than Bristol, that I why I say it should be Mum.

my friend says Mom but not with such a strong "oh" sound as americans, we're from the midlands and Ive always thought it was really wierd but she says other stuff wierd as well so i think its just her!

I agree with bednobs - although we don't use it very much in the UK, 'Mom' isn't wrong in any way. What you call your family is your and your family's business and no one has a right to say it's wrong.

I think a lot of people from the Birmingham area spell it 'Mom'. We also pronounce tooth - tuth and gooseberry - gus berry. It really seems to irritate people!

Ma late father would speak of "yir Mam" meaning mum and mother is "mither"

of course it should be mum, mom is american, however, my daughters aged 22 and 20 call me marge, probably something to do with the simpsons lol

I've always thought mom was the american way, but I met someone from Birmingham at the weekend who used it. Before that I'd never heard anyone in the UK use it.

I say 'Mum' but i've always written Mom. No idea why.

I used to know someone from Birmingham who also said and wrote mom. I'd never come across it outside the US before.

I'm from Dudley in the Midlands and I always use and write Mom and Mommy. My sister pronounces it the same as me but spells it Mum or Mummy. Must be a Black Country thing!
