Does anyone know of a Brit sitcom from the 90s that revolved around an African General living in Hampstead?

I think the sitcom was screened on Channel 4 but may well have been on BBC2, I think one of the characters was called Nelson. The main character may well have been an ambassador or even a political leader living in exile.
