This originates from Sigmund Freud's theory of the 5 stages of psychosexual development of Man. First is the mouth, then the anus, phallic, latency and lastly the genital stage. According to the theory, a failure to come to terms with a particular stage will result in dysfunctional behaviour corresponding to that stage.

And so - it is thought that at the anal stage (which occurs from the age of 1 to 3) the child starts to notice the pleasure and displeasure associated with bowel movements. Through toilet training, he also discovers his own ability to control such movements. If a child receives excessive pressure and punishment from parents during toilet training, he will experience anxiety over bowel movements and will take pleasure in being able to withhold such functions. Individuals who fail to progress pass this stage are thought to be obsessively clean and orderly. They may also be very careful, stingy, withholding, meticulous, conforming and passive-aggressive.
