The link notes the French 'prendre la chevre' literally 'to catch ,take or fetch (or even 'assume' ) the goat' which means to get angry for no reason. The French have another expression ' rendre quelqu'un chevre', literally ' to make someone goat ', which is 'to drive someone up the wall'. The connection is the notoriously uncertain temper of a billy goat.If you end up being like it you are angry to the point of breaking ! I suggest that it's this which lies at the root of our saying.
