I'm going to try Pompeii by Robert Harris(I think) next. It sounds quite interesting.
Continuing the sddsdean theme, he might enjoy Archangel or Fatherland, also by Robert Harris. The Bonesetter's Daughter by Amy Tan was terrific, I thought. Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides is good. If he enjoyed White Teeth, don't buy him her next one, The Autograph Man - load of boring bilge in my opinion.
Treacle - I'd rate any of the Tom Clancy books well worth a read Clear & present danger is a fave, the late James Clavell Noble House & Taipan especially; Chris Ryan's are a good read and for war [WW2] you can't beat Douglas Reeman or his alter ego, Alexander Kent [on a par with CS Forester] who follows a midshipman's career in the days of sailing ships - 1780's >> Happy reading Treacle senior ;+)
Avid reader, know what I like!!! However, two people lent me books that they INSISTED I try. Definitely, no way in the world were they my cup of tea. I finally read and thoroughly enjoyed them. Sometimes it's the "something different" from the norm that makes a great gift.
Have a look at What A Carve Up by Jonathon Coe,really good and a brilliant look at our country in the 80s mixed with a family life ongoing for years.....funny but very clever.
Umberto Eco's new novel 'Baudolino' is very good - especially if your dad has read and enjoyed Eco's previous bestseller 'The Name Of The Rose'.
