rhythms?
That all depends on whether you think y is a vowel or not, as it serves a vowel on occasions, and zyzygy - what does that mean??? - is one of those occasions. If, for the sake of argument, we assume that y isn't a vowel, then RHYTHM is another 6 letterer - or as a plural, 7, as mash101 points out - and then you have SKY, MY and THY. Leaving out the y then you are probably limited to sounds, such as SHH and HMM. However, you could make it a long SHHHHHHHH, or very pensive HMMMMMMMMMMM, if you really wanted to go for a record.

The letter y is not a vowel. It may behave like one sometimes but it is not considered to be one. As for "hmm" and "shh" they probably aren't official words and therefore, technically, thry wouldn't count. Even if they are official words they won't be spelt with enough letters to be longer than rhythms.
I agree with Stoogmeister and mash101 - the longest is RHYTHMS. I remember bringing up the subject in school (cor that takes me back!) and that was the longest that was found...and Y is NOT a vowel!

The longest word considered, using the fact that "y" is not a vowel, is symphysy or tyndyllyngs. Although the word "tyndyllyngs" may be put up in discussion whether it is a word or not.
