The word "Bletch' is very localised slang for filthy grease from Crewe Railway Works!
Apparently, steam locomotives from Bletchley engine sheds were brought regularly to Crewe for repair and servicing, and those from Bletchley were always very much dirtier than those from elsewhere.
Bletch as a synomyn for filthy, greasy muck passed into local general use - to this day people who've got dirty will say, "Look at me, all covered in bletch!".
I'm really curious now, please tell me where you heard it!
