A gore was a wedge-shaped piece of land, and is related to the Anglo-Saxon word gar, a 'spear', presumably from the shape of the head. The same element is present in garlic, 'spear leek'. A gore is still used to describe a wedge-shaped piece of cloth in dressmaking circles.
